Cinder Smith

Registered Psychologist

I believe therapy should be as unique as the person seeking it. My approach blends psychoanalytic exploration with evidence-based strategies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), and Motivational
Interviewing, along with contemplative practices that foster deeper reflection and healing.

I work exclusively with adults who are ready to engage in meaningful change. While I do not provide crisis intervention, I offer a steady, supportive space for longer-term growth.

In addition to my training in psychoanalysis, CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing, I have specialised training in trauma-focused approaches. This area of work is deeply meaningful to me, informed by both professional experience and my own journey of loss.

I am a Registered Psychologist with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in psychology, and years of experience helping adult build clarity, resilience, and self-understanding.

What is a Psychologist? And how do they differ from a life coach, social worker or a counsellor?

A psychologist studies how we think, feel, and behave from a scientific viewpoint and applies this knowledge to help people understand, explain and change their behaviour. A psychologist has a minimum of a Masters Degree, has professional training and clinical skills to evaluate and treat mental health issues/disorders. Psychologists have expertise in all aspects of psychological functioning, including cognitive, emotional, behavioural, spiritual and intellectual dimensions. Psychologists tend to deal with clinical issues, whereas life coaches or counsellors often do not have as robust clinical training but can offer support and tools to mental health issues. Psychologists can help you process trauma, while life coaches and counsellors cannot.

What is trauma-informed therapy versus trauma-specific therapy?

Trauma informed care/therapy is a universal framework offered by many mental health professionals (ie. psychologists, counsellors, social workers). Trauma informed care is a broad-scope approach to the sensitivity of trauma.
Trauma therapy is a specific and focused approach to treating trauma. Goals of care are quite different when trauma therapy is required. Your psychologist will assess and determine whether trauma specific treatment or trauma interventions are required. Trauma can be considered the great chameleon of mental health disorders/issues which is why working with a psychologist can be very critical, beneficial, and healing.
